Maria Sharapova beats Christina McHale 6-2, 6-1 in second round at U.S. Open

Maria Sharapova, the former world’s number one, looked the part on Thursday night as she cruised past Christina McHale in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the 2009 U.S. Open.

Sharapova struggled a bit with her first serve, putting just 50 percent in play but she managed to win 79 percent of those offerings. The Russian committed seven double faults and 20 unforced errors in the match but McHale was overmatched and could produce just six winners in the match.

Maria Sharapova returns to US Open with easy victory

Maria Sharapova came armed with her nerve and her serve Tuesday night on Arthur Ashe Stadium court. Showing no evidence of an uncertain serve that has plagued her this summer, Sharapova dispatched Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova, 6-3, 6-0, in 73 minutes at the U.S. Open - 2009.

Sharapova missed the first five months of this season while recovering from last fall's shoulder surgery, and the 22-year-old Russian is seeded 29th. It is an unaccustomed place in the draw for the woman who was once ranked No. 1. Sharapova said she was particularly happy with how she attacked the match by moving forward. "It adds a little bit to my ground strokes," she said.

It's great to be working with her and adding a new dimension to Cole Haan's history," said Jim Seuss, Cole Haan's Chief Executive Officer. Cole Haan is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nike and Maria's footwear collection features Nike Air technology. The collection includes stilettos, sandals, boots, and flats. Pricing ranges from $138 - $238. The bag collection offers everything from a small frame clutch to a chain link satchel. They are priced $248 - $428.

Maria Sharapova took another big step in her comeback at the Toronto Cup on Saturday reaching her first final in more than year with a gritty 6-2 4-6 6-4 over Alisa Kleybanova.

Maria Sharapova advanced into Rogers Cup semis

Late last night just when it looked as if a third set was eminent, the former world number one Maria Sharapova of Russia battled back from a 2-5 second set deficit to close out the 14th seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-2, 7-6(7-5) to reach today's Roger's Cup semifinals.

Sharapova, who saw her ranking plummet from number one in May of last year to number 126 in May of this year, took nine months off from the WTA Tour following a an October shoulder surgery. The Russian, know for her glamorous looks, loud screams during play, and very aggressive groundstrokes, is currently ranked number 49 and stands a slim chance of obtaining a ranking high enough for a US Open seed with a final round showing this week in Toronto.

Maria Sharapova rolls along

Maria Sharapova rolls along. Wind, rain, thunder, lightning, Russians. Those elements were unleashed last night at the Rexall Centre, as the Rogers Cup tried to pare down to today's quarterfinal draw in a weather-delayed round of 16.

After 90 minutes to let the tornado danger pass, and then a second rain delay, tennis beauty Maria Sharapova's quest for her first title since shoulder surgery resumed, winning a dogged match with Russian comrade Vera Zvonareva, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Dominating early in the match when, at one point, Zvonareva had made 19 unforced errors to Sharapova's three, the latter encountered troubles holding her serve, But Sharapova is further along than in her two previous trips to the Rogers Cup and has yet to require a third set in her three rounds.

Sharapova now faces Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, the tourney's 14th seed.

Maria Sharapova cruises into WTA 3nd round Rogers Cup - 2009

Maria Sharapova struggled in her 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Austria's Sybille Bammer in double-faulting 17 times. "I'm actually having a competition with myself to see how many errors and double faults I can make and still win the match in two sets," said Sharapova.
