Maria Sharapova moves into US Open 4rd round

Maria Sharapova has put an emphatic halt to Beatrice Capra's U.S. Open success story, blanking the 18-year-old American 6-0, 6-0 in blustery Arthur Ashe Stadium.

With whipping winds pushing hot dog wrappers, napkins and even, at one point, Capra's visor all over the court, Sharapova handled the conditions remarkably better. She won 59 points to 29 for Capra and advances to play top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round.

Maria Sharapova cruises past Iveta Benesova into U.S. Open third round to face Beatrice Capra

Maria Sharapova advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open on Thursday with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic. The 14th-seeded Sharapova had as much trouble with the wind at Arthur Ashe Stadium as with her 68th-ranked opponent.

Maria Sharapova defeated Jarmila Groth in her first round match in the US Open 2010

Maria Sharapova defeated Australia's Jarmila Groth (4-6, 6-3, 6-1) in her first round match in the US Open 2010 on Tuesday, Aug 31.

Buzz up! Sharapova lost her first set to Groth, ranked 60th after reaching the fourth round in 2010 French and Wimbledon championships, but fought back to win the next two sets to cruise to the second round. Groth hammered 13 winners in the first set and won by 4-6. Later in the second and third set Sharapova played well and made Groth to play more shots, inducing 20 unforced errors. Groth donated points with shaky serving, including on the last point of the second set. Sharapova will face Czech's Iveta Benesova in the second round.
