Maria Sharapova Advances At Wimbledon
Today Maria Sharapova won the first round at Wimbledon 2009. Russian Maria Sharapova has defeated Ukrainian Viktoria Kutuzova in the first round at Wimbledon.
Sharapova rallied from two breaks down in the first set before winning 7-5, 6-4 on Monday. The former top-ranked Russian trailed 4-1 and 5-3 in the first set before winning the last four games. Two other Russian players who reached the second round of Wimbledon are Alisa Kleibanova and Anastasia Pavluchenkova. 13 Russian tennis players are entering Wimbledon. The men include Nikolai Davidenko, and the women, the world’s number one in her sport Dinara Safina, Svetlana Kuznetsova, the fourth-seeded Yelena Dementyeva and the Wimbledon champion of 2004 Maria Sharapova. The latter is making a quick recovery from a shoulder injury. The strongest non-Russian competitors on the female side are the formidable Williams sisters. The prize fund this year is 12 and a half million pound.
