Russians ruling the WTA

LOS ANGELES -- Look at the field at the WTA Championships, it looks more like the Kremlin Cup than a tennis tournament in Los Angeles.

Wednesday’s first day of action had four of the five Russian women in action for a tournament with only the top eight players from the points race qualify. It caps off an impressive year where not just a player, but a nation broke through with three different girls winning Grand Slam singles titles -- Anastasia Myskina in the French, Maria Sharapova taking Wimbledon and Svetlana Kuznetsova taking the U.S. Open.
